Hamburg 2011

Hamburg, March 30, 2011: Improving the quality of healthcare, increasing the efficiency of the systems and ensuring patient empowerment - these are the common goals worldwide when discussing the necessary transformation of the systems in order to guarantee a sustainable healthcare delivery in the future. The Global E-Health Forum – Hamburg 2011 will represent all the major stakeholders involved in designing personalized healthcare.

"E-Health is increasingly seen as a key enabler for this transformation", so Ljubisav Matejevic, founder and honorary chairman of the Global E-Health Forum. "And as a key enabler for the evolution process towards personalized healthcare in general. Healthcare that is proactive, instead of reactive, gives the patient the opportunity and the responsibility to become more involved in their own health. The ultimate goal will be to shape preventive and diagnostic care to match each person's unique characteristics."

The first two conference days will feature speakers from all over the globe. Their strategy presentations and case studies will be complemented by discussion forums, workshops and an exhibition of solution providers. The third day is dedicated to various breakout sessions and guided tours at different locations (among others hospitals) targeting the individual information needs of special interest groups.

The Global E-Health Forum is an interdisciplinary platform to discuss strategies, cross-border cooperation and collaboration, innovative economic/financing models. "We need to learn from best practices regarding quality and knowledge management, standardization, process optimization. And we need to implement a patient-centric way of thinking." concludes Ljubisav Matejevic. "Our challenge is to design personalized healthcare."

Continua Case Study: The Regulatory Implications of Interoperability Workshop
October 20, 2010
Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Boston MA

8:00 am ET - 11:00 am ET

Continua, is pleased to offer an exclusive workshop that will focus on FDA regulation of interoperable medical devices as well as analyze the roles of the FCC, FTC and DOJ.
An overview session will review regulatory structure, current enforcement activity and Agency initiatives for 2010 and beyond.  A second session will incorporate these considerations into a case study and invite active participation from attendees.

Session 1:

Covers the major 2010 initiatives from FDA CDRH, FTC, FCC, and DOJ in relation to the medical device industry.  Specific focus on impacts to interoperable medical devices.  Topics covered include: CDRH stance on EHRs; FCC-FDA cooperation; FTC/FDA/DOJ enforcement activities related to marketing and sales of medical devices; CDRH activities related to home use devices and 510(k) program modifications.  This session will help you understand how these activities may impact your development activities and regulatory responsibilities before and after placing a product on the market.

Session 2:

This session will cover additional detail in the following areas:

  • Brief overview of who the FDA and what their role is
  • Medical Device Basics: Reminder of what is a medical device; Difference between OTC and Rx medical devices; What does FDA-listed, 510(k) exempt, 510(k) cleared, PMA approved, site registration, CFG, COE, recognized standard, etc. mean?
  • Device Review Process: What is the process for filing a 510(k)? Information about Medical Devices: Examples of where to look for information relevant to the above topics.

Session 3:

This session expects to draw the audience into a discussion of a hypothetical case study involving a company that has an innovative technology that can serve a key role in an interoperable environment.  The issue to be resolved in this one-hour discussion is: should the company cross the regulatory threshold and if so, how?  We will explore whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.  If the company wants to enter the regulated market, we will discuss how they should position the new product and what claims they should make.

To register only for the workshop, please contact admin@continuaalliance.org.  Pricing for the workshop only is $100 USD.

If you would like to register for the Connected Health Symposium, a special reduced rate of only $850 (a $100 discount off the regular registration rate) is available for Continua members - click here for the discount code.

mHealth 2010 Conference and Exhibition
September 13, 2010 - September 15, 2010
Dubai

Experience the first ever truly global mHealth conference

We are proud to introduce our inaugural mHealth 2010 conference and exhibition, the world’s leading independent event for mobile health. See key representatives from across the globe, come together for the first time under one roof.

mHealth is going to be a two day global interactive event with opening keynote plenary sessions. It will source key speakers from across the entire mobile health ecosystem and will become a platform for discussion, debate and networking. The conference will focus on launching and monetising mobile healthcare services as well as looking at real-life case studies and deployments. mHealth 2010 brings together leading players from across the entire mobile healthcare ecosystem. It will feature 35+ top executive presentations and global case studies. The conference will facilitate the global development of mobile healthcare and explore ways in which universal healthcare can be delivered with the aid of mobile technology.

2010 is THE year for mhealth

2010 has been dubbed as THE year for mobile healthcare, and it has certainly got off to a great start with Continua Health Alliance announcing the first end-to-end connected health solution. More and more mHealth programmes are set to launch and compete for market share across the world.

The opportunity in terms of revenue generation is enormous. ABI research estimates that there will be 15 million medical devices by 2012 - innovating from legacy mobile units, through to radio pills and smart band aids/plasters. The Wi-Fi enabled healthcare product market will be worth an estimated $4.9 billion in 2014. New product launches continue to be announced on a regular basis, but live programmes still remain a minority, meaning that many MNOs and healthcare institutions are yet to finalise their mHealth strategies and won’t have decided upon their favoured technology partners.

That is where mHealth 2010 comes in!  If you want to meet over 200 mHealth project leaders at an event explicitly designed to help them select technology partners, then you need to join us at the inaugural Global mHealth Conference & Expo on the 13th  and 15th  September in Dubai, in The Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach.

Join hundreds of others to take advantage of this unique event

  • First ever truly global mHealth conference with presentations and attendees spanning  from Japan to Peru
  • Ecosystem: Meet all of the key stakeholders in mHealth: mobile operators, systems integrators, devise manufactures, healthcare professionals, governments, NGOs, application and software developers
  • Dynamic: less formal presentations with more interactive panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and a live application shoot-out
  • Independent: Your hosts, Clarion Conferences don’t represent mobile network operators, hospitals, software or any other stakeholder. We have no software of consultancy services to sell

With over 200 attendees, global case studies, key decision makers, innovative formats and built-in networking time, this is a conference that you cannot afford to miss!

AAL-Continua Forum

Europa Hotel, Belfast

14 June 2010, 14:30 – 16:45

Please click here to view the agenda.

Europe is ageing, which presents challenges and opportunities. New tools and services are being developed to support older people. However, health and welfare systems are under pressure. More than ever, people look to ICT solutions to maintain quality of life, enable independent living, and ensure quality and safety of care, while improving efficiencies and saving costs. Effective deployment is however hindered by regulatory uncertainties, misaligned incentives, lack of trust among stakeholders and other factors.

Two important stakeholder groups are industry and government, and this Forum is bringing them together. The AAL Joint Programme, founded in 2008, is an initiative of 23 Partner Countries and the European Commission to support research and development to enhance the quality of life of older people and strengthen the industrial base in Europe through the use of ICT. The Continua Health Alliance is a non-profit, open, international industry coalition of more than 200 member companies which collaborate to develop a system of interoperable personal health solutions focusing on health and wellness, disease management, and independent aging.

The AAL-Continua Forum on 14 June 2010 in Belfast will begin and foster a dialogue of both groups and address one of the main challenges of the market: research and innovation are being funded, but few solutions reach the market, and fewer still become successful. What are the barriers to market entry, growth and success, and how can they be removed? How can governments and industry work better together to address the common challenges?

Format: Selected experts will set the stage for a lively debate among European and international industry and government representatives. The Forum will be open to the public, and is directed at all stakeholders interested in market issues related to ICT-based solutions for the elderly. Click here for a preliminary agenda.

Attendance is free but the organisers request you register by clicking here:

Place/Time: The event will take place in the Europa Hotel, Belfast, on Monday, 14 June 2010, the first day of the ECH Campus Connected Health Week, from 14:30 to 16:45. All attendees are invited to attend the opening of the opening reception at 17:30 on the exhibition floor.

Offer: The ECH Campus Leadership Summit on 15/16 June 2010 is an international gathering of key practitioners, thought and industry leaders from the field of Connected Health. Forum attendees can register at the early booking rate: use code "book6194" when registering at www.echcampus.com.

Educational Sessions (open to the public):

  • Reimbursement 201: When someone else pays the bill,
Presented by Lynn Shapiro and Daphne Clark of EpsteinBeckerGreen
  • Through the efforts of Continua and other organizations, health reform may include reimbursement for remote monitoring in the not too distant future; the ink may well be dry by the end of January. Further, even under the current system, there are more options for getting at least the services component reimbursed, a critical step to encouraging the marketplace to buy and use remote monitoring tools.
  • Privacy 301: Privacy and Security Requirements for Connected Healthcare: more than just HIPAA
Presented by Robert Hudock and Russ Gray of EpsteinBeckerGreen.
  • Privacy and security continue to be top of mind issues for both consumers and policy makers as the nation shifts the health system toward an interconnected and electronic future.
  • FDA 345: Mobile Health Case Study
Presented by Colleen Hittle and Brad Thompson of EpsteinBeckerGreen
  • Continua is organizing a major conference with FDA in January, 2010. We will follow up on the prior course materials presented during the Continua 2009 meetings with new insights gained at that FDA meeting.

Presented by Colleen Hittle and Brad Thompson of EpsteinBeckerGreen

  • MBA 301: Strategic Planning for Profitable Entry in Connected Healthcare
Presented by Bill Venema of EpsteinBeckerGreen and Dane Stout of Sun Microsystems
  • Picking up on the themes from FDA 345, this class will focus on the range of relationships possible in that middle space. After the killjoy regulatory experts are done defining the requirements for the middle category, the creative and more fun-loving corporate types will discuss the myriad of ways that collaborators can work together to advance their mutual business interests.
  • IEEE 11073 Training
Presented by Douglas Bogia, PhD, Chair of the IEEE 11073 Personal Health Device Committee
  • The tutorial covers all of the optimized data and communication standards being created in the IEEE 11073 Personal Health Device working group. This includes the Optimized Exchange Protocol (ISO/IEEE 11073-20601), the device specializations (6 in the disease management domain, 2 in health and fitness domain, and 2 in the independent living domain), and the status of those standards. Since implementations are underway, time will be available for answering questions about implementation barriers or places where the standards are not clear. If there is interest, it will also be possible to step through an implementation to inspect the details of the protocol dynamically.
  • Path to Certification
Presented by Julie Fleischer, Chair of TCWG, Michael Kirwan, Technical Operations Manager, Continua and AT4 Wireless
  • This educational session will cover what types of devices can be certified in the next 3-6 months as well as pre-requisites such as Bluetooth HDP/MCAP and USB PHCD certification basics and how to obtain these requirements. It will also cover how to apply for Continua Certification as well as the certification process and what to expect. The session will also walk through the Continua Version 1 Guidelines as well as a demonstration of the v1.0 Test Tools developed by AT4 Wireless.
  • Overview of ONC Meaningful Use/ARRA provisions and relevancy to Continua Remote Patient Monitoring
